Bed Bug Prevention While Traveling

Posted on: 27 January 2016

Bed bugs can be one of the peskiest pests that you can encounter. They're difficult to see, they mainly come out at night, and worst of all, they have no problem with feeding on humans, causing you to have itchy bumps all over your body. One of the easiest ways to pick up beg bugs is while you're traveling. Luckily, there are preventative steps you can take to make sure that bed bugs don't follow you home.

Before Traveling

There are certain kinds of luggage that are better at preventing bed bug infestations than others. The perfect kind of suitcase to use on your travels to ensure that bed bugs don't follow you home are hard-shell suitcases. A hard plastic case is not a particularly comfortable situation for bed bugs, and they can't make a home like they can in other types of luggage with lined interiors. Make sure to wrap all of your clothes in tight plastic before placing them in your suitcase. This will make bed bugs less apt to make a nest in your clothes, as this tight plastic can suffocate them.

Inspect Your Hotel Room

Hotels tend to be ground zero for bed bug infestations simply due to the sheer amount of people that make temporary homes in them. Carefully inspect the bed of your hotel room for bed bugs. Remove the linen bedding from the bed and go over it with a fine tooth comb. Bed bugs love to hide in tight-fitting nooks and crannies, so do not neglect to check behind the bed board and between the box springs and the mattress. Bed bugs thrive in the dark, so turn off the lights and shine a flashlight, if you have access to one, to pinpoint where bed bugs make their home.

The Return Home

Just because you're back from your trip doesn't mean the possibility of bed bug infestation is over. Make sure that you check all of your belongings for bed bugs, including anything you purchased while on your trip. Unpack your clothes and other possessions from your luggage away from the bed, so that bed bugs can't leap from your suitcase to your bedding.

If you do manage to pick up bed bugs during your trip, it is imperative that you call on the services of a bed bug exterminator as soon as possible. Bed bugs can be tricky to locate and difficult to get rid of. An exterminator can help you with this matter. Although many pest control companies focus on matters such as termite control, it is in your best interest to find one that specializes in bed bug control.
